Do I Need to Be Flexible to Start Kickboxing?

You don't need impressive flexibility or high kicks to begin kickboxing. Start with the range of motion you have and develop technique gradually.

No.

You don't have to touch your toes, kick over your head or fold yourself into a pretzel before you're allowed to try kickboxing.

Start with the body you have.

High Kicks Aren't an Entrance Requirement

Beginners sometimes see experienced martial artists throwing high kicks and assume that's the standard.

It isn't.

A technically sound kick at a comfortable height is far more useful than forcing your leg higher than you can control.

Range of Motion Can Develop Gradually

Training exposes you to movement.

Warm-ups, technique practice and consistent training may help you become more comfortable moving through your available range.

But there is no flexibility exam before class.

Technique Comes First

Kickboxing isn't about seeing how high you can throw your leg.

Balance matters.

Position matters.

Control matters.

Timing matters.

Learning how your body creates movement matters.

Height is only one variable.

Work With Your Body, Not Against It

Adults come into class with different histories.

Different activity levels.

Different mobility.

Different old injuries and limitations.

If something doesn't feel right, communicate with your instructor and train intelligently.

There is no medal for pretending your body isn't giving you information.

Don't Create Another Excuse to Wait

“I need to get flexible first” sounds responsible.

Sometimes it's just procrastination wearing workout clothes.

If you want to try kickboxing, come try kickboxing.

You can work on the rest while you're actually training.
